Addiction
By Trevor Vivian
A tri sector engagement approach calls for businesses to involve all three sectors-business, government, and nonprofit in their work. Tri sector leadership allows businesses to take charge and be the driver in the solution process to complex problems. Multiple sectors have tried to wrap their heads around the continuous problem of substance abuse and mental health related issues. Great Britain is now the “addictions capital of Europe” (telegraph). “Drug and alcohol
abuse fuels poverty and deprivation, leading to family breakdown and child neglect, homelessness, crime, debt and long term worklessness. The Public sector such as the government has looked further into Great Britain’s substance abuse issue by increasing number of methadone clinics nationwide. However the public’s response is “accusing the government of inadequate
response to heroin addiction”, saying that more than 40,000 addicts in England have been left stranded on the substitute methadone, which is used to wean people off heroin. (Winnet Par 5). However the public sector is left helpless since 55% of councils funding for residential drug addiction treatment cut since the coalition came to power (Winnet Par 9). The government is
putting their best foot forward to combat substance abuse within Great Britain, however budget cuts and consistent visits to methadone clinics don’t ween addicts away from complete sobriety.

The private sector looks to combat substance abuse issues within Europe by institutions for profit such as UKAT look to combat substance abuse within individuals but they are a for profit institution. UKAT looks to reshape, rehabilitate as well as build quality traits through treatment, counseling, and detox. UKAT stands for United Kingdom Addiction Treatment Centers, you can call them and check into one of their 160 beds to combat your addiction issues (UKAT Par 3).

While many organizations look to combat substance abuse within UK. Mentor UK struck me as a great nonprofit organization for young children. Mentor UK is the leading charity working to prevent alcohol and drug misuse among children and young people. Mentor UK works with children to make sure they have the right support at the right time while growing up. Their mentor strategies are to work with children and young adults to build their skills and thrive with the self-confidence they develop through such activities. Mentor UK works to implement children into sporting organizations, to develop their skills and passion towards a sport/ activity to keep them away from the rising substance abuse issues. (Sylvia Par 3) Mentor UK teaches
lessons to children at a very young age of alcohol consumption and how it can impact their future goals/ambitions.
