Men's Mental Health
By Joe Grifonetti
Our group will be focusing mental health around the world, during this process we will be comparing and contrasting mental health issues, stigmas, and treatment from other countries and the United States of America. My issue which is one that is rather close to me, due to the sadly high number of friends I have lost over the years to suicide, is men’s mental health. Covering this topic my end goal is to truly understand men’s health issues and try to end the stigma of weakness that is surrounded by men around the world who seek mental counseling and help from a plethora of sources. In the United States alone there are over six million men each year who are affected by depression. Obviously depression, and suicide are global issues that affect men everywhere though. For example, in Japan suicide is a large factor in deaths for men of all ages and all levels of socioeconomic classes. Per 100,000 male deaths in Japan, 24 were suicides which is more than triple of women suicide in Japan. A statistic such as that, truly shows how it has an impact on multiple generations (not just millennials). As this issue is becoming more serious as the years go by, there is a push to help men around the world who are suffering. The Global Action on Men’s Health is one of the key players in this movement. The GAMH wants to Encourage the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international agencies involved in public health to develop research, policies and strategies on men’s health. With the leadership of the GAMH and other leaders, hopefully we can end the stigma of men’s mental health issues.
