Treatment

There are thousands of people across the world who suffer from mental health. As I cover this topic, my main focus is to find countries who are successful in treating mental health and see how they do it. There are numerous treatment options for someone struggling with a mental illness. Some of these options include psychotherapy, medication, case management, support groups, peer support, and self help plans. Mental Health America has conducted research and found that “many people diagnosed with a mental illness achieve strength and recovery through participating in individual or group treatment” (Mental Health America). According to Benedetto Saraceno, “the interest in evaluating mental health care processes has greatly increased and research on mental health” (Saraceno). Throughout the world, people are becoming more and more aware of mental health. This is causing more countries to rethink their mental health treatments. In 1978, Italy drastically changed the way they treat mental health. This process was a deinstitutionalization. This method respected the freedom and dignity of the mentally ill and viewed them as citizens. During this process, mental hospitals were closed and other facilities had to be restructured. Italy’s new model for mental health treatment encourages patients to engage in their daily activities. According to Dr. Colucci, "the Trieste approach is based on five principles: individualized care plans through active negotiation; ensuring comprehensive responsibility of Community Mental Health Centers in all phases of treatment; working with and on the environment and the social fabric; supporting individual freedom and strengths; and fostering service accountability toward the community” (Pathways to Italy). Unfortunately, the United States often chooses to neglect and ignore the people who are suffering from mental health, which in turn results in suicide, addiction, or causes them to become sicker. Globally, there are organizations who are starting to fight the battle against mental health. The World Health Organization, (WHO), is working with governments and and research experts to encourage and support countries to improve access to high quality mental health treatment and care. With the WHO and countries like Italy, other countries such as the United States can provide better treatment and resources for those who are suffering.
